Mia Van Veen (born 1986) is a contemporary Norwegian visual artist recognized for her innovative sculptural works and wall reliefs that bridge traditional handicraft with contemporary industrial processes. Based in Oslo, Norway, her artistic practice reimagines historical decorative techniques—such as traditional Norwegian rosemaling—by treating industrial metals as fluid painterly mediums.
She earned her Master of Fine Arts from the Iceland Academy of the Arts between 2015 and 2017, following a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Emily Carr University completed from 2012 to 2015. Her primary gallery representation is with ISCA Gallery in Oslo.
Van Veen's signature sculptural methodology involves manipulating rigid metals—including copper, steel, tin, brass, titanium, and aluminum—through thermal manipulation, welding torches, and acid applications. By substituting traditional canvases and paintbrushes with welding machinery and molten metals, she uses techniques like melting tin onto copper and steel sheets to replicate the organic flow, undulating thickness, and pressure of a physical paintbrush stroke. Her notable institutional and gallery exhibitions include Silver Lines and External Rotation at ISCA Gallery in Oslo, as well as F a s c i ae at KOSA and presentations at international platforms such as the Untitled Art Fair in Miami.
